The best used Suv’s

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

With all the ways you can use a suv, no wonder it is the most popular body type of choice to use. Just about every auto maker has a Suv or maybe several models. Ford has 5 suv’s now, but three are very popular. When gas prices went above $4.00 a gallon it made the smaller suv’s more sought after, like the ford escape. The escape is a small but roomy vehicle that gets good gas mileage. Another very popular vehicle ford has is the ford explorer. This vehicle is a very stylish suv with a 3rd row seating available. For people not worried about gas mileage they have the expedition, which is a large suv, but not their largest.

Chevrolet’s and GMC have some popular suv’s like the Chevy Blazer and the GMC Envoy to name a few. Both of these vehicles are just alike all but the name. These vehicles can be very nice finished, and are pretty roomy. They both come with 3rd row seating available now. Chevrolet also has several new cross over vehicles to choose from one popular one is the Chevy Equinox. The Equinox is a small suv kind of cross over vehicle with good room and good gas mileage. The Chevy Equinox can come with a LT package which comes with leather seats and wood grain dash. Stereo system for front and rear of vehicle with dvd players in back of seats.

Toyota has a lot of Suv’s to choose from like the Sequoia Suv, it is a larger suv that actually gets very good gas mileage. The Sequoia is finished off inside and out very nice and comfortable. The Toyota Sequoia comes with a v-8 engine which has lots of power to pull things or just cruise. The next Suv for Toyota is the Toyota 4runner which is almost like the Sequoia, but is a little smaller in size, and has a V-6 motor and some what better gas mileage from it. The Toyota Highlander is next in line and it is even smaller in size, still much like the bigger ones before it. They finish all their vehicles very comfortably inside and out. All the Suv’s by Toyota can come with leather and wood grain finishes, plus nice wheels and tires. Also the Toyota Rav4 is the smallest of them all, but like the other Toyotas it is a very good vehicle and reliable.

As you can tell I did not talk about the large Suv’s, simply because I think gas prices are going back up so there want be a lot of interest in that type of vehicle. Most all the big car makers have their on large Suv, known as the gas drinkers. Chevrolet has the best large Suv on the market, called the Chevy Tahoe, it has been around for several years even decades. But as you can tell, I am going to stay with the most popular right now.

Cargo Space: Crossover Versus Suvs

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Americans are known for their preference for large vehicles such as pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. Aside from having adequate interior room, light trucks are favored by many because of the amount of cargo that it can carry. But the size of these light trucks means that it would need a bigger engine which will obviously consume more fuel.

The increasing price of gasoline in the United States and in the global market has led car buyers to stay away from these gas guzzlers even if they provide a good amount of storage space. In order to provide adequate cargo space to car buyers and at the same time bring down fuel consumption, car manufacturers started developing SUV-like vehicles on car platforms.

The result of using car platforms to create vehicles larger than sedans and hatchbacks gave birth to the crossover SUV. These vehicles looks like SUVs but, unlike the latter, it is built around a platform used for cars. The use of car platforms results in a better handling and ride comfort as well as reduced fuel consumption. Aside from these car-like attributes, crossover vehicles are also known for their cargo space which rivals that of SUVs.

Full-size SUVs of today like the Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Tahoe are based on truck platforms. Although Ford and General Motors has done much to reduce as much truck qualities from these SUVs, the origin of these SUVs are still apparent. Even with good suspension components such as the Chevrolet Tahoe leaf spring, the handling of the Tahoe is very much like a truck.

To give consumers sharper handling and other car-like attributes, car manufacturers are now using car platforms for their larger-than-sedan vehicles. One of the newest crossovers to hit the market is the Saturn Outlook. The crossover is developed with German car manufacturer Opel.

With its European styling come the capabilities of an SUV in terms of cargo space and the handling, ride, and fuel efficiency of a car. The Outlook, although smaller than the full-size SUV Tahoe, provides more cargo space than the latter. This means that auto buyers now have a choice to get what they want in an SUV while having a vehicle with car-like handling and gas mileage.

The Outlook provides more legroom than the Tahoe. Another advantage that the Outlook has on the Tahoe is its fold down third row of seats. While the Tahoe’s third row of seats needs to be taken out of the car to increase storage space at the back of the vehicle, the Outlook’s needs only to be folded down. Although the Outlook has more cargo space and legroom than the Tahoe, its towing capacity is relatively less than that of the Tahoe.

The construction of the Tahoe and the Outlook determines their towing capacity. Since the Chevy Tahoe is built around a truck platform, it tends to be heavier and sturdier than a car platform. Thus the choice is up to car buyers, if cargo space inside the vehicle is the primary concern, then the Outlook is a perfect choice. For those looking to haul cargoes, the Tahoe or the Expedition for that matter is a good choice. But if looking outside these two body styles, a minivan can accommodate more cargo inside it as compared to a crossover or a full-size SUV.

According to a recent study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), General Motors Corp. vehicles had the highest and lowest driver fatality rates from 2002 through 2005. And the highest rate is linked to Chevy Blazers.

The study found that the Chevrolet Blazer which comes as a two-door, two-wheel drive SUV built from 2001 to 2004, had the highest rate of driver fatalities which amounts to 232 per million registered vehicles during the four-year duration.

The Blazer was launched in 1969 on the C/K pickup truck chassis that produces GM’s trucks. In 1970, the largest automaker introduced Jimmy – its own model of the truck which was produced until the arrival of GMC Yukon in 1992. The Blazer is replaced by the Chevrolet Tahoe which is now a full-size SUV.

The Blazer and Jimmy, based on the short wheelbase trucks, were made available with either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Its long wheelbase sibling is called the Chevrolet Suburban. Both the K5 Blazer and the Jimmy were given fabulous removable tops for the first few years until 1976 when the half-cab body style was launched. In 1983, the S-10 Blazer and S-15 Jimmy, all smaller models, were introduced. The original Blazer and Jimmy remained in production until 1991.

GM’s Chevrolet Astro, on the other hand, is the recipient of the lowest rate with only seven fatalities per million registered vehicles. The Astro boasts of powerful auto parts that consist of engines, AEM intakes, radiators, filters and more. The midsize van, which has debuted in 1985, is engineered to compete with domestic rivals like the Dodge Caravan. The Astro shares the same platform with GMC Safari which is its sibling.

In connection with the rating, the Infiniti G35, BMW 7 Series and the Toyota 4Runner came next to the Chevrolet Astro. Additionally, the two-door Acura RSX had the second-highest rate with 202 driver deaths followed by the Nissan 350Z, with 193 deaths.

The Chevy Astro and Blazer went out of production in 2005.

Automakers said the study was limited in scope because it did not include factors such as driver behavior that could play a key role. “It’s difficult to really draw much significance,” said GM spokesman Alan Adler.

Nissan said its vehicles, including the 350Z, are designed to meet government safety regulations and the automaker’s internal safety requirements. Chris Naughton, a spokesman for Acura parent Honda Motor Co., said that the Acura RSX had younger buyers, which could have contributed to its ranking.

The IIHS found the average death rate decreased from 110 from 1990 to 1994 to the current rate of 79 for the 2002 to 2005 period.

Getting to Know Chevy’s Futuristic Vehicles

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

These vehicles are not just merely those units that hold a design and style that looks futuristic. There are no flashing lights or LCD windows or anything of that sort. These vehicles actually hold the engine technologies of the future for they have been created to have lesser emission.

These are Chevrolet’s new vehicles and they are going to be on display for everyone to see at the upcoming Philadelphia International Auto Show. The event takes place on the first of February with a press conference at ten in the morning at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. General Motors’ vice president for global product planning, John F. Smith, would be there to show off their range of vehicles. A number of Chevrolet vehicles would be taking the spotlight and showing off the features that they have been built to have.

One of these vehicles would be the Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell and this one is known to have the capacity to spurt out zero emissions. It can even zoom for a total standstill to a high of 60 miles per hour in just 12 seconds. Tests on the vehicle revealed that it can clock a top speed of 100 miles per hour.

A full sized SUV in the form of the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid would also be seen there. Made to run on two wheel-drive, the Tahoe Hybrid has the capacity take in eight adult passengers and to achieve 21 miles per gallon in the city. Experts have even said that this vehicle has got better mileage than those units from the Honda wheels manufacturer.

The Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid would also be taking its place in the spotlight. This time, the unit is considered to be the most refined sedan and the most fuel efficient unit in its segment. Previous models of the Malibu had not been able to receive 24 mpg for city driving and 32 mpg for highway driving from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Remember Bumblebee from Transformers? Well, a Chevrolet Camaro Convertible concept unit would also be basking in the limelight. This unit has a forward-looking design as reported by The Auto Channel but still has a splash of its style heritage. This one is already set to go into production by next year.

Traffic safety has been one of the top priorities of car manufacturers in designing and producing their mass market vehicles. Nowadays, it is common to find a long list of safety features on vehicles. While the most recognizable car brand in terms of safety is Volvo, other car manufacturers have also provided their consumers with the latest in safe vehicle technology.

General Motors’ division Chevrolet is one of these companies which offer a long list of safety features. The company’s safety features are divided into three parts namely before, during and after an accident.

Safety before an accident is composed of features which allow drivers to have total control of a vehicle to avoid accidents at all costs. One of the Chevrolet’s safety before features is the ABS or the anti-lock braking system. This feature is commonly found on new vehicles and almost all of Chevrolet’s auto models. The ABS reduces the risk of a wheel lockup on hard braking. This ensures that the driver would not lose control of the vehicle. This also reduces braking distance by allowing drivers to brake heavily without risking wheel lockup.

Vehicles equipped with ABS are the Chevy Aveo, Cobalt, Corvette, Impala, Malibu/Malibu Maxx and the Monte Carlo for cars. For SUVs, the Equinox, HHR, Suburban, Tahoe, and the TrailBlazer are all equipped with this safety feature. Trucks equipped with this are the Avalanche, Colorado, and the Silverado. These trucks can be equipped with aftermarket Chevrolet pickup pedal covers to make the vehicles not only safe but also aesthetically sound.

The ABS feature is also used to complement another safety feature which is the Traction Control System. This system reduces wheel spin especially on slippery road surfaces. This feature uses the same sensors used by the ABS to determine the power that the engine needs to deliver to a particular wheel. This feature is available on the Colorado and the Silverado Classic trucks. For cars, the Cobalt, Corvette, Impala, Malibu/Malibu Maxx and the Monte Carlo are all equipped with this safety feature. For vans, the Chevy Uplander is also equipped with traction control.

Another safety feature that allows drivers to avoid accident is the StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System. This system uses electronics to help drivers take control of the vehicle. It automatically adjusts the vehicle’s power output to complement the steering input of the driver. The feature’s sensor gathers data from the steering wheel’s position and how the vehicle actually reacts to it. If the onboard computer sensed that the driver is under steering or oversteering, it will correct it automatically by activating the brakes or adjusting the engine torque. Chevrolet auto models equipped with this feature are the Corvette for cars; the Equinox, Suburban, Tahoe, and the TrailBlazer for SUVs; the Avalanche, Silverado and the Silverado HD for tucks; and the Express and the Uplander for vans.

Aside from this, all Chevrolet vehicles are also equipped with daytime running lights. This feature makes vehicles visible even through fog and rain. This feature reduces the risk of traffic accidents caused by the inability to detect the vehicle’s presence by another driver.

Safety during accidents for Chevy vehicle occupants is ensured by a variety of safety features which includes the safety cage. The design of the frame is aimed to protect the occupants from front, rear, and side collisions. The cage which is made of reinforced steel is complemented by crush zones. These are areas which absorb the energy of an impact therefore reducing the impact on the occupants of the vehicle. The safety cage is used in the construction of all Chevrolet vehicles. The protection of the occupants is also ensured by the safety belts that come with every Chevrolet vehicle. It has been proven that seat belts are the most effective safety technology in protecting motorists in cases of crashes. Seat belts are complemented by airbags which also comes with every Chevrolet auto model.

Chevrolet offers a complete menu of airbags for their vehicles. These airbag systems are: front air bags (standard), dual-stage frontal air bags, side-impact air bags and head-curtain side-impact air bags. These safety features give Chevrolet auto models five-star frontal crash test ratings. These vehicles given the highest safety ratings are: the Aveo 5, Impala, Malibu Sedan, Malibu Maxx, Monte Carlo, Equinox, HHR, Suburban 1500, Tahoe, Avalanche, Colorado 4-Door, Silverado 1500, Express 1500, and the Uplander.

The safety of Chevrolet vehicle occupants is ensured by OnStar. With this GPS-based feature, an activated airbag can be detected. An Advisor will then call the vehicle, if the driver or passenger is able to answer the call, the Advisor will then request for emergency assistance to be respond. Aside from this, OnStar also features remote door unlocking and vehicle diagnostics.

The Chevy Volt Revolution

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Bob Lutz GM’s 72-year-old Vice Chairman sits on the cutting edge of new hybrid technology. It is in fact Mr. Lutz and his belief in hybrid technology that has led Chevrolet to create some interesting new hybrid models due out soon including the Silverado, Tahoe, Malibu and Equinox. Under Mr. Lutz’s guidance, Chevrolet even produced a fleet of transit buses powered by their Allison Electric Drive Transmission system for King County, Washington. A fleet is expected to save King County over 750,000 gallons of gasoline a year over the non hybrids it replaced according to hybrid-car.org.
Perhaps more important than any of the strides forward to date will be the 2010 launch of a brand new hybrid on its very own platform. We are of course talking about the 2010 Chevy Volt, part sports car, part green machine, all fun.
Officially unveiled at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on January 7, 2007 in Detroit, Michigan, the new Volt represents one of the first hybrid coupes to market. It was designed to meet the needs of most everyday commuters by providing electric power for up to 40 miles based off of its battery charge. In between the hybrid power and the internal combustion engines, the Volt is said to be able to travel 640 miles on a full charge. Perhaps most importantly, the Volt has been designed with the everyday user in mind.
With a price point around $30-40k, the Volt can fit the budgets of most middle class families looking to break the mold. Plus, based on a secret source, Bloomberg revealed in August ‘07 that first year production will yield 60,000 Volts. That number is nearly triple the amount of Prius that were made available to consumer post launch. A move that led to waiting lists, purchases over sticker price and a variety of other hype on Toyota’s behalf.
One of the other reasons the Volt represents a large step forward for American automakers is the unique E-Flex system. This new platform from Chevy will ultimately allow for deployment across a variety of Chevy hybrids in the future and lies at the core of its success. The design combines a small electric motor with a lithium ion battery for the electric component while the gas engines is based on a small 1 liter engine to do the work at higher speeds. The combined package creates an engine with a peak output of 160 horsepower. Despite this low hp rating, electric engines accelerate far faster than combustion engines as displayed with the Tesla Roadster which goes from 0-60 in under four seconds according to their site.
In addition to a new platform, new technology and a reasonable price, the Chevy Volt and other cars that rely heavily on electronic propulsion require less maintenance:
• Filters need less changing due to decreased need for air filtration
• Brakes need less changing due to friction breaking
• Less moving parts equals lower probability of engines malfunctions
• Reduced oil changes/engine maintenance to reliance of electric technology
Facts in hand, take a minute to think about your next purchase and why a Chevy Volt may be the right car for you.

The Chevrolet sports utility vehicle series has been a stunning success for General Motors Corporation. Smaller than the Chevrolet Tahoe but larger than the Blazer, the Chevy Trailblazer portrays the patented technological standard of the company. More than ever, it puts the Chevrolet banner on top of the list of the most dynamic vehicles ready for action. The Trailblazer provides the most refined luxury features and offers superior handling control. These make the model perfect for off-road and on-the-highway driving activities. Looking at the components like the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier alone justifies the polished concentration applied in building up this vehicle.

Used in the car’s air conditioning system, the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier, is employed to allow the thermal expansion valve to have a liquid refrigerant. This ensures the proper operation of the valve which cannot run efficiently without the aid of this component. Placed close to the condenser, it can be easily noticed because of its shape, which is similar to that of a fire extinguisher. Both the expansion valve and the condenser are connected to the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier. The indispensable functions of this Chevy component are to separate the liquid and the gas as well as to take away the moisture and to eliminate the unwanted external particles. At its top portion, it usually includes a sight glass, which is used to boost the system. When a vehicle has a receiver drier, there is no need to have an accumulator.

Checking the condition of the receiver drier improves the function of the Chevy Trailblazer. When the part is efficiently working, the driver must ensure that the sight glass does not have any noticeable vapor bubble. Whenever bubbles appear, they indicate that the system has inadequate refrigerant. This requires a check up by a professional mechanic. Eventually, this happens as the ideal function of the car component lasts for only two years. Therefore, having a major repair or replacing the Chevy Trailblazer A FS C receiver drier is normal.

Chevy Volt Crosses Border to Canada

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Since the unveiling of the concept version of the Chevy Volt at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) earlier this year, it has attracted the attention of the entire auto industry. Recently, the Chevy Volt Concept made its way across the border to be unveiled for the first time in Canadian soil. The debut of the Volt in Canada came at the energy and Environment Conference in Toronto.

The Chevy Volt promises a vehicle that would virtually eliminate the need for a city driver to refill its gas tank. This is because the Volt is a plug-in hybrid vehicle. This means that its battery can be recharged using a common household socket. Its battery pack can power the stylish Volt for long distances before needing another recharge.

“If you are like most Canadians who live and work within a 64 kilometer round trip the Volt is a gas free, emission free car,” says David Paterson, the vice president for corporate and environmental affairs for General Motors of Canada. “Drivers will simply unplug and go each morning – much as we do with our cell phones today,” he added further.

According to General Motors, the Volt can be recharged using an ordinary 110-volt socket. To fully charge the vehicle’s battery, it requires about six hours of uninterrupted charging. This means that a Chevy Volt owner can charge the car before going to bed at night and the Volt will be fully charged by morning.

A fully charged battery pack can provide the Volt with power for it to cover 64 kilometers. The vehicle is tailor made for drivers who does most of their driving within a city. The 64 mile allocation may be enough for Volt owners to eliminate refueling the vehicle with gasoline. It is calculated that power from the grid is less expensive than gasoline thus making the Chevy Volt a practical vehicle.

In case that a driver needs to cover more than 64 miles in a day, an internal combustion engine (ICE), called the range extender by General Motors, will kick in. The ICE will be configured to run on alternative fuel such as ethanol, hydrogen or biodiesel. It can also run on conventional gasoline. The engine will be used to charge the vehicle’s battery pack. The combination of the range extender and the electric motor gives the Volt an impressive 1,000 kilometer range.

“At GM we believe that tomorrow’s automobile must be flexible to accommodate many different energy sources and choices for consumers, and a key part of that flexibility will be enabled by electrically driven cars,” says Paterson. “With battery contracts in place and a dedicated team of engineers, General Motors is moving to bring the Volt closer to reality.”

General Motors recently awarded developmental contracts to two companies. The two companies will be working on the development of efficient and advanced lithium-ion battery packs for the Chevy Volt.

Once the Volt goes into production, it will join other environment-friendly vehicles in General Motors’ lineup. In Canada, General Motors will be offering hybrid versions of the Saturn Vue and the Aura as well as the Chevy Malibu. A two-mode hybrid version of the Chevrolet Tahoe winch mount¬-equipped Tahoe will be a part of General Motors’ offering in the country along with the GMC Yukon come this fall. Two-mode hybrid versions of the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra will be added next year.
